I am going to do a series of posts on designers – past and present – who are really inspiring in their field, be it illustration, pattern design, product design or something else. The first in the series is the wonderful Vera Neumann who I mentioned in my last post. Her designs have a sense of lightheartedness and fun that still feels refreshing many years later. I love her sense of colour and line. She began her business with her husband from her kitchen table, originally producing table lines. She soon branched out into her infamous signed silk scarves (the first being produced on parachute silk) and later onto home wares and clothing. Luckily there are still plenty of Vera pieces available to buy from various vintage sellers, and even some current items available via her estate. There is also a rather good looking book available of her work, which I think I may have to get. I would love to own one of those calender tea towels, such a good idea.
